NAUGHTY GIRL:
a Portrait completed over Nine
Sessions
for
Wales Portrait Award 2
Anybody who prefers their
portraiture tempered with a degree of flattery will not be detained by
this painting for
very long.. Executed between August and October 2007, the motivation
behind
this portrait was to concentrate not only on quantifiable appearance,
but
also to capture the essential spirit of playful mischief so often
displayed by my sitter and partner, Carole King; herself an artist.
The means by which these features
are
translated comprise a variety of surface treatment, from fine detail to
broad
gesture. Areas of impasto beside thinly glazed sections serve to
provide
incidental interest across the picture surface.
